The fix was to replace the driver's side mirror internal assembly which cost about £150 from a dealer for the part, I fitted the mirror bits myself which took a couple HecDogThu, Mar-09-2006, 10:26:32 PMI wouldn't trust a dealer. Basically i have owned my bmw e46 318ci now for 5 weeks and when ibought it the guy said that the passanger mirror does not work and all it needed was I called couple of BMW dealers in the city and they told me the same: "$300+ for both and they often burn out in couple of months any way!" The ones on my mercedes only turn on when its cold. I pulled the mirrors off and the voltage from the supply was 11.9 volts, engine off, and 13.8 (or so) with the engine running. You are absolutely right about damaging the lens and housing by over heating. I am assuming that the mirror will now not heat up with just one of those wires due to an incomplete circuit.
